How to Reach Shillong
A complete guide to traveling from Guwahati to Shillong and arriving at Lawei Homestay.
Getting to Shillong
✈️ By Air (Shillong Airport & Guwahati Airport)
The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International
Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, located about 130 km from Shillong. It is
well-connected to major Indian cities.
Alternatively, Umroi Airport (SHL) in Shillong is around 30 km from the city center,
but it handles limited regional flights from Kolkata
and a few other eastern cities.
🚂 By Train
Meghalaya does not currently have active passenger railway lines. The closest major railhead is the Guwahati Railway Station. From the station, you can easily hire shared cabs, private taxis, or catch a bus connecting Guwahati to Shillong.
🛣️ By Road (NH6)
The road journey from Guwahati to Shillong is approximately 100 km and typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours over the beautiful, four-lane NH6 highway. Private taxis and shared cabs are available right outside the Guwahati Airport and Railway Station. State-run and private buses also operate continuously on this route.

Once you arrive in Shillong, locating us is easy. We are situated in Mawlai Umshing Umjapung. Local taxis are readily available from Police Bazar and other central locations to Mawlai Umshing. Let the driver know you are heading to the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) area.
